This Sunday! ‘Detroit’s Native Son’ – Oct 25, 3p Burton Theatre

Peace all, A couple of weeks back, I was invited to a screening of Yusef Bunchy Shakur’s new documentary, ‘Detroit’s Native Son’. It was an honor to be invited to this small gathering at the Urban Network Bookstore, which is right around the corner, yet very much on the other side of the tracks, from where we live in Woodbridge.

Sitting with many of Yusef’s family and friends, I watched as his life unfolded through the documentary. It was intense to see Yusef’s story, one that many have been inspired by through his books and his work in the community, as informed by those around him, friends, family, rivals and fellow activists. I deeply appreciated the opportunity, though a challenging one, to look more directly at a life so deeply filled with the realities of our city, both the violence and abuse and the miracles and redemption.

Yusef is hosting another screening at the Burton Theatre this Sunday, October 21st at 3pm. There are still VIP tickets available through eventbright. I highly recommend checking this one out. Respect ~Gregg
