August 2009 – Coming Home
This Evolve Detroit serves to remind you of tonight’s Detroit Abides. It is hard to believe that we’ve been sharing a movie in Eastern Market every month for over a year now and this evening is certainly one not to miss. We’re honored to screen Michigan filmmaker Chris Bedford’s COMING HOME E.F. Schumacher and the Reinvention of the Local Economy and are pleased to share that Chris will be joining us for our discussion as well! We’ll also be joined by Jerry Belanger, one of the originators of Detroit’s local currency, Detroit Cheers. In addition to celebrating the work of E.F. Schumacher, we’ll explore the potential of expanding the use and strength of local currencies by fostering connections to urban agriculture and local markets. If you are unfamiliar with Schumacher’s work, I’ve included what I consider to be a stunning meditative film from 1978, E F Schumacher: On the Edge of the Forest. Even if it is a busy day, I recommend giving yourself the opportunity to watch the first 5 minutes of this film. Angela and I have found it extremely inspiring.
